Why Does My Computer Keep Freezing? 7 Causes and How to Fix Them

1. Overheating

When a computer gets too hot it protects itself: first it slows down, then it freezes, then it shuts off entirely. Fans clogged with dust and thermal paste that dried out years ago are the usual reasons — and Perth summers find every weak cooling system in the suburb. Signs to look for: the fan roars just before a freeze, the case or keyboard feels genuinely hot, and freezes cluster during games, video calls or anything demanding.

The fix: with the computer off, blow the dust out of the vents with compressed air — you’ll be amazed what comes out of a three-year-old machine. Keep the vents clear in use, and never run a laptop on a doona or couch cushion, which blocks the intake completely. Want to confirm heat is the problem? 2. A failing hard drive

A dying drive makes the whole system hang while it retries failed reads — freezes that last a few seconds and then release, often with the drive activity light stuck solid. You might also hear clicking from a mechanical drive, or notice programs taking far longer to open than they used to. This is the one freeze you should never ignore, because its endpoint is a drive that won’t read at all — with your photos, documents and tax records on it.

The fix: check the drive’s SMART status with a free tool like CrystalDiskInfo — it reads the drive’s own health monitoring in seconds. Anything other than ‘Good’ means back up today and replace the drive this week, not this month. The silver lining: replacing a failing hard drive with an SSD doesn’t just stop the freezing, it makes the machine faster than the day it was bought — it’s the best-value repair in computing. If the drive is already failing badly (files disappearing, drive not always detected), stop using it immediately; every hour of use reduces what a data recovery service can get back.

3. Not enough RAM

With too little memory, the computer swaps to disk constantly and everything stutters. Signs: freezes when many browser tabs are open, the disk sits at 100% in Task Manager. Fix: close what you don’t need, remove startup programs — and if you’re on 4–8GB, a RAM upgrade is cheap and transformative.

4. Driver conflicts

If freezes started right after a Windows update or new hardware, a driver is the likely cause. Fix: update the graphics driver from the maker’s site (not just Windows Update), and roll back the most recent driver in Device Manager if the timing fits.

5. Malware

Malware freezes machines by hammering the CPU or fighting your antivirus. Signs: freezes with the fan racing while you’re doing nothing, ads or toolbars you didn’t install. Fix: run a full scan with Windows Defender plus a second opinion from Malwarebytes. If the machine is badly infected, a professional clean-up is safer than living with it.

6. Too many background programs

Every app that ‘starts with Windows’ takes a slice of memory and CPU. Open Task Manager → Startup tab and disable everything you don’t recognise as essential. It’s the least glamorous fix on this list and one of the most effective.

7. A failing power supply (desktops)

An ageing PSU delivers unstable power, which shows up as freezes and random restarts under load. Signs: freezes during games or renders, restarts with no error message. This one needs a workshop — a failing PSU can take other parts with it when it dies.

Laptops add two suspects: a swollen or dying battery (freezes when unplugged, case bulging) and heat — laptop cooling is cramped at the best of times. If your laptop only freezes on battery, have the battery tested before anything else.

When freezing means hardware failure

Bring it to a technician if: freezes happen during startup before Windows loads, the SMART check shows drive errors, you see graphical glitches alongside the freezes, or it freezes in Safe Mode too. Those four point to failing hardware that DIY fixes won’t touch.
